A first dental visit that feels easy
Whether it’s your child’s very first visit or a fresh start, we’ve thoughtfully designed every step to help your family feel comfortable, prepared, and cared for.
A Positive Relationship From the Very Beginning
A first dental visit is about much more than clean teeth. It’s an opportunity for your child to become comfortable in the dental setting, get to know our team, and begin building healthy habits with confidence. Our approach is simple: gentle, thoughtful care in a calm, welcoming environment. We take the time to do things right, so your child builds a positive relationship with the dentist from the very beginning.

Care That Grows With Your Child

Infants and toddlers (0-3)
A gentle, reassuring start—for both of you
Early visits are simple, calm, and incredibly valuable. Most exams are done as a lap-to-lap exam, where your child sits facing you while we gently examine their teeth and gums.
During this visit, we:
- Check early tooth eruption and development
- Evaluate gums, oral tissues, and bite patterns
- Look for early signs of decay or enamel concerns
- Assess habits like thumb sucking or pacifier use
- Provide guidance on feeding, oral hygiene, and prevention
These visits allow us to catch small concerns early—often before they become more complex—and help your child feel completely safe in the dental setting.

Young children (3-6)
As your child grows, visits become more structured—always at their pace and comfort level.
At this stage, we typically:
- Perform a gentle cleaning and polish
- Complete a thorough exam of teeth, gums, and bite
- Monitor spacing, alignment, and jaw development
- Take digital X-rays when appropriate
- Apply fluoride to strengthen and protect enamel
We also focus on helping your child understand what’s happening—so they feel confident, involved, and proud of their smile.

Older children and tweens (7+)
Supporting independence while staying proactive.
As children mature, visits focus on prevention, monitoring, and long-term development.
During these visits, we:
- Perform comprehensive exams and professional cleanings
- Monitor bite development and orthodontic needs
- Evaluate for crowding, airway considerations, and growth patterns
- Take X-rays as needed to assess developing teeth and bone health
- Provide personalized guidance on hygiene, nutrition, and habits
At this stage, we’re not just maintaining healthy teeth—we’re helping guide development to avoid more complex treatment down the road.

What to expect at your child's first visit
A warm welcome
From the moment you arrive, our goal is simple: help your child feel at ease. Our team takes the time to greet your child, get them comfortable, and ease them into the environment, always at your child's pace.
Meet the team
Your child will meet our pediatric dentists and caring team before the visit begins. We’ll introduce each step using friendly, age-appropriate language and answer any questions so both you and your child feel comfortable, informed, and supported.
A gentle exam and cleaning
Based on your child’s age and comfort level, we’ll gently examine their teeth, gums, bite, and dental development. We may also complete a professional cleaning, apply fluoride, and take digital X-rays when clinically appropriate.
A positive finish
We end every visit with plenty of encouragement, and, of course, a prize. Our goal is for your child to leave feeling proud of what they accomplished, confident about dental care, and excited to come back and see us again.

common questions from parents
We recommend scheduling your child's first visit by age one or within six months of their first tooth erupting, whichever comes first. Starting early allows us to monitor development, provide guidance on nutrition and oral hygiene, and create a positive introduction to dental care before any concerns have a chance to develop. Early visits are typically brief, low-key, and focused on building trust and comfort rather than completing extensive treatment. The earlier we start, the more we can do to set your child's smile up for a lifetime of health.
Please bring your child's insurance card, any completed new patient forms if you have not already submitted them online, and a list of any medications your child is currently taking or relevant medical history we should be aware of. If your child has a comfort item, a favorite stuffed animal or toy, feel free to bring that along as well. We want your child to feel as comfortable and at home as possible from the moment they arrive, and familiar items can make a real difference for younger or more anxious patients.
Keep your language around the appointment calm, positive, and simple. Avoid using words like pain, needle, or drill, and focus instead on the idea of meeting a friendly team who is going to help keep their teeth healthy and strong. Reading children's books about going to the dentist can be a wonderful way to introduce the concept in a fun and approachable way. Most importantly, try to keep your own energy relaxed and upbeat. Children are perceptive, and a calm, excited parent goes a long way in setting the right tone.
Dental anxiety is incredibly common in children, and it is something our team is highly experienced in navigating with patience and care. We encourage families to let us know in advance if their child tends to feel anxious so we can tailor the experience accordingly, whether that means a slower pace, a desensitization visit before any clinical care begins, or a conversation about sedation options. We never push a child further than they are ready to go, and we celebrate every small step forward. Many of our most anxious new patients become our most enthusiastic returning ones.
First visits typically take between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on your child's age, the type of exam performed, and whether a cleaning and X-rays are included. We recommend building in a little extra time for your child to get settled and comfortable, especially if it is their very first dental appointment. Our team will give you a clearer sense of timing when you schedule so you can plan accordingly.
Not necessarily. Whether X-rays are taken at a first visit depends on your child's age, their dental development, and any clinical concerns the doctor identifies during the exam. We follow the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and only recommend X-rays when they are clinically appropriate. Our state-of-the-art digital X-ray technology exposes patients to significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and we will always discuss the recommendation with you before taking any images.
Absolutely. We welcome parents to be present throughout their child's appointment, and for younger children, it is often an important part of helping them feel safe and comfortable. For infants and toddlers, we actually encourage you to be right there in the room during the lap exam. As children get older, some are more relaxed with a parent nearby, while others do better with a little independence in the chair. We take our cues from you and your child and will always let you know what we think will set them up for the best experience. Your comfort matters to us just as much as theirs.
Please tell us. The more we know going into your child's first visit with us, the better we can prepare and tailor the experience to help them feel safe. Our team is experienced in working with children who have developed fear or anxiety around dental care, and we take a slower, more intentional approach with kids who need it. We never rush, we never push further than a child is ready to go, and we celebrate every small step forward. Many children who have had really hard experiences at other practices find that their time with us feels genuinely different. We would love the chance to help rebuild that trust.
We are proud to be a practice that welcomes children of all abilities and needs. If your child has sensory sensitivities, a developmental diagnosis, a complex medical history, or anything else that affects how they experience a dental visit, please reach out before the appointment so we can prepare accordingly. We adapt our approach, our pacing, our communication style, and our clinical techniques to meet each child where they are. For children who are not able to tolerate treatment in a traditional setting, we also offer a full range of sedation options to make sure they can access the care they need comfortably and safely. No child is too complex for us.
Don't just take our word for it.
